Eclipse® Hydrangea is the first true dark-leaf mophead hydrangea, renowned for its intense, dark purple foliage that retains its rich color even in warm climates.
The plant features striking dark leaves paired with spectacular amethyst or cranberry-colored blooms. Eclipse® Hydrangea can serve as a stunning focal point or a refined accent in decorative containers. Its blooms, also, make excellent cut flowers.
Eclipse® Hydrangeas thrive best in partial shade. In cooler climates, they can tolerate more sun. The ideal location receives morning sunlight and afternoon shade to protect the blooms from excessive heat. It prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil. For clay soils, integrate organic matter like compost to improve soil conditions.
Eclipse® Hydrangeas bloom on old wood. To ensure healthy blooms each season, only prune after flowering, usually in late summer or early fall. This timing allows the plant to form buds for the following year. Remove spent flowers by trimming just above a healthy set of leaves. This encourages the plant to direct energy into developing new buds.
